One of the best leadership books I’ve read in a long time. I picked it up because it was about space. I couldn’t put it down because the author shared actionable insights about life and getting the most out of it. His words were visually stunning as he described life in space and life changing for me as he shared his insights on how making the biggest impact sometimes requires making the smallest impact.
I never thought about going about your day as, “are you a -1, a zero or a +1?” Yes, that was a spoiler. When I look back at my life and business interactions from that mindset and review the impact I have had, I can see where I was each of those and how being a zero or a +1 was really the way I should have acted yet my actions in some cases made me a -1. I can also see how I could have readily shifted from a -1 to a zero or +1.
It is not easy to realize that sometimes having zero impact is more important than contributing as a +1.
Here are a few questions, beyond the number theory I just mentioned, that I recommend thinking about as you read this book:
- 1. Are your goals yours and are you living your life to reach them?
- 2. What do you see when you look at the world around? Do you see the wonder and joy or the sorrow?
- 3. What actions can you take, today, to take a step forward?
- 4. Where are you showing up as a -1, zero or +1? Is that the right place to be?
Learning how astronauts train should be required business and life training for everyone. A must read for anyone serious about making a difference in the world.
