Another masterful book by the author of The Go-Giver. I found this book to have insightful and actionable information on how to win people over without manipulation and coercion. It is no coincidence that is the subtitle of the book!
Taking the idea that influence is more than just making others do what you want, Bob Burg explains how anyone can, with slight changes in the way you speak and inevitably think, can become an ultimate influencer who affects change through kindness and empathy and without the resistance that prevents forward motion.
On page 85 Mr. Burg says, “Not only do we see the world from our own set of beliefs but we assume that everyone else sees the world the exact same way.” In order to make a difference in the world I believe it is vitally important to “see” the world as others see it so you can understand their motivation. We cannot go into a conversation to shift perception unless we understand the other person’s drivers and their perception first. This book shows you how to know when to agree to disagree and how to present your viewpoint in a way that creates an opening for the other party to respond versus react to the ideas and opportunities you present.
If you are in business, are married, have kids or just participate in life, I highly recommend grabbing and reading this book. Mine is quite dog-eared with all the pages that gave me aha! moments.
As you read this book think of these questions:
- 1. How do I feel when someone tries to “convince” me of anything?
- 2. When I have changed my mind after someone talks to me, how did they present their argument?
- 3. When I begin a conversation, is my mind focused on the outcome I want without understanding the other person’s beliefs?
Enjoy the book and post your comments!
